COOL Newsletter December 2019

COOL a project in the Pools family.

Cool (Clil Open Online Learning) is developing a web3 service where a teacher can paste in text, select the language of the text, add graphics and video, create or attach language exercises/assignments and then automatically create an online webpage with all words linked to free dictionaries in +100 languages.

The teachers access to Clilstore will be simplified so the present database look will be replaced with easier/intuitive choices. The students access will likewise be simplified, e.g. the first step for a newcomer will be to select language and level thus avoiding having to browse through thousands of units in many languages.

All the COOL outcomes are free to use (Copyleft)

Ongoing improvements

The teams are now translating the Clilstore interfaces into the project languages, the image below is from a Danish browser where a user is looking at level B1 units in Spanish.

Clilstore now automatically changes its interface language to that of the browser used, e.g. Internet Explorer in Italian will result in the Clilstore interfaces in the Italian language (we are still in the process of translating). We are also translating the Interfaces into other languages like Lithuanian and Bulgarian.

The above screen shot shows the translation interface needed for Clilstore. In future we’ll invite friends from other countries to assist with their languages:-)

From Liceo Vittorini

In September, after having hosted the international meeting with our partners, we held a course for 15 teachers in cooperation with ETI Malta. One of their teachers taught us how to improve our use of the Clilstore by producing interactive units and embedding web3 exercises created through some specific sites.

On 21st and 22nd November 2019, the three teachers in charge of the project, held a two-day workshop, 6 hours on the whole, for a small group of fellow colleagues who were trained in creating Clilstore units and web3 exercises.

Both courses, the English one by ETI Malta and the Italian one in November, have been quite successful. Our teachers have got very interested in the Clilstore and they have found Multidict particularly useful.

Two levels of tests have been made:

  • The language specialist teachers have been testing the Clilstore units produced in Italian to check the level of quality.
  • Tests on Clilstore lessons in English have been carried on in class.

The best units are shared with our colleagues so that a first feedback is provided. Cooperation and dissemination inside our school is the way to get more and more teachers involved and interested in the project, the task being to have a larger number of Clilstore units authors and users.

As an output Liceo Vittorini has published fourteen units about Art, Italy, literature, sport, science and Italian fashion. A choice of exemplary units will be soon ready for the partners to test.

The Liceo Vittorini headteacher, Dott.ssa Albalisa Azzariti, took part in a meeting held by Invalsi, the National Research Institute for Education,  in Viterbo in November.
Here she met teachers, headteachers and researchers from all over Italy, working in all different kinds of schools. She had the opportunity to disseminate the Cool project and she got a lot of participants interested.

Throughout the year, ETI has disseminated the COOL Project to 1319 teachers from all sectors – Primary, Secondary, Vocational, and even Tertiary (university staff). The educators came from 46 different countries from within and outside Europe:
AT, AZ, BE, BG, BR, CA, CH, CN, CZ, DE, DK, DZ, EE, ES, FI, FR, GE, GR, HR, HU, IE, IT, JO, JP, LT, LV, MG, MK, MQ, MT, MX, NL, NO, PL, PT, RO, RU, SD, SI, SK, SW, TR, UA, UK, US, ZA.
All these participants attended Teacher Training courses at ETI Malta in 2019, and were given a presentation about the COOL project, CLILStore, and 2 other projects ETI has been involved in (METHODS and CLIL4U).As we come to the end of the first full year of working on CLILStore, ETI Malta looks back on what we have been able to contribute to the COOL project in 2019.
First of all, through our knowledge of how other ICT tools work, we have been able to advise on additional CLILStore functionality and suggest changes to make it more user-friendly and versatile. Moreover, we have been checking out a range of external web resources to enhance CLILStore Units by extending the unit into more rounded lessons and modules.
We are currently working on designing exemplary CLILStore Units, showcasing units which also utilise these external web tools. Two such examples can be seen here:
https://multidict.net/cs/8017
https://multidict.net/cs/8009

To see more exemplary units designed by ETI in the next few weeks, you can search for units by Owner (etimalta) and using the Title COOL. All our ETI output units for the COOL project will start with the word COOL. Go to https://multidict.net/clilstore/ to start your search.

Indian languages in Clilstore
The sharing of Gaelic voices with the help of Clilstore continues to extend to more new languages, thanks this time to the kind collaboration of Dr Dharani of the Government Arts and Science College in Avinashi. She has now recorded a Tamil voiceover for the documentary on the Uist community newspaper, Am Pàipear, first published eight years ago, with feature stories on Norman Maclean and Tobar an Dualchais.

This emerges as a welcome spin-off benefit from the “Mediating Multilingualism” project in which Gordon Wells is involved through UHI and Soillse. Dr Dharani had already taken Clilstore into new linguistic territory through her interview with Gordon at the International Language Fest in Shillong, available here. (Rusa Bhowmik also performed a similar service with Bangla.) Complementing that later with this longer film was then a simple question of translating the script and recording the new narration – all done on a mobile phone and transferred instantaneously from India to Scotland via Facebook Messenger!

Here’s the film: https://youtu.be/mhm6BoZ-SME
And you can follow it on Clilstore too (with wordlinked transcript) in Unit 8020: http://multidict.net/cs/8020

SOILLSE Seminar at University of Glasgow

In mid-November the SMO and Ulster COOL teams collaborated to deliver a two-day seminar, organised by Soillse – the National Research Network for the Maintenance and Revitalisation of Gaelic Language and Culture (www.soillse.ac.uk)  and hosted by  Sgoil nan Daonnachdan (School of Humanities) at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

On Day 1 of the seminar, Caoimhín Ó Dónaill from Ulster gave a talk on the background and context of the COOL project and focused CLIL methodology and the many technical and end user innovations that will be realised during the lifetime of the project.

The seminar also featured a talk from staff at the Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic (www.dasg.ac.uk) who demonstrated how they are breathing new life into a corpus of printed and audio materials that were previously unavailable to members of the general public. Discussions during the seminar naturally led to the COOL team investigating how they could facilitate the sharing of DASG materials via CLILSTORE with a view to further assisting DASG end users through CLILSTORE’s unique dictionary hyperlinking functionality.

On Day 2 of the seminar, Caoimhín Ó Donnaíle from SMO delivered an intensive training workshop on CLILSTORE. During the workshop the participants had the opportunity to create some new units and gain a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes at CLILSTORE.

From Denmark

On October 25th Kent Andersen presented the project with three round table presentation and handed out 100 brochure during the EfVET conference on the Azore (Portugal)

On the 21st of November Kent Andersen, FAZ showcased the project in Vejle with a workshop at an Erasmus+ event co-organized by the Danish National Agency and EfVET Denmark. The workshop had 34 participants from vocational colleges across Denmark. His presentation demonstrated preparation for a project starting with idea through application, running a project, and reporting.

The workshop participants got an insight to the ongoing work with COOL and after the workshop Kent has been contacted by several participants and the number of registrations for the COOL newsletter has been increased.

Preparations for the workshop

In the last few months the Danish team from Kroggaardsskolen has been testing different online multimedia tools that may be suitable for use together with Clilstore. We have been teaching our colleagues (language as well as content teachers) how to use Clilstore and Multidict integrated in their teaching. We have shown them how to make use of the different online tools that the Maltaes team taught us to use in Milano.

We’ve been working on a brochure targeting the parents telling them about the project and how the students will benefit from it.

It is now possible for the parents to read about the project on the school’s homepage and we are in contact with colleagues from other primary schools that we will use for testing the tools and for disseminating the results.
